Wealth, Intentionally
Directed.

We help successful families and business owners coordinate sophisticated tax, estate, investment, business and charitable strategies around one objective: preserving more of what you've built for the people and purposes that matter.

Our Approach
Our motto

Every dollar you save in tax is another dollar to invest in your business, your family, and the causes you care most about.

When wealth becomes complex

Your financial life shouldn't operate in silos.

Tax decisions affect investments.

Business decisions affect estate planning.

Estate decisions affect family.

Charitable decisions affect taxes.

And every one of those decisions affects what ultimately happens to your wealth. We bring them together.

Coordinated by Smart Stewardship
The framework

Preserve. Coordinate. Transfer. Impact.

I

Preserve

Protect and preserve capital through intelligent tax and wealth strategies.

II

Coordinate

Bring the family's professional advisors and financial decisions into alignment.

III

Transfer

Create deliberate strategies for transferring wealth to family, future generations and other beneficiaries.

IV

Impact

Use wealth intentionally to support charitable, personal and legacy objectives.

Stewardship

Your wealth will eventually go somewhere. The question is whether that destination is intentional.

Wealth has only a few destinations: lifestyle, family, taxes, charity and legacy. Smart Stewardship helps families make deliberate decisions about how wealth is preserved, deployed, transferred and ultimately used.

Think of it this way

Taxes are involuntary philanthropy. Let us help you keep more, and then have more control over that which you do not keep.

i.

How do I keep more of what I've built?

  • Tax strategy
  • Entity planning
  • Investment taxation
  • Charitable strategies
  • Advanced planning structures
ii.

How do I turn business wealth into family wealth?

  • Exit and ownership transition
  • Liquidity planning and diversification
  • Post-sale wealth strategy
iii.

How do I transfer wealth intelligently?

  • Estate planning coordination
  • Gifting and trust strategies
  • Family governance
  • Multigenerational planning
iv.

How do I make my wealth accomplish something meaningful?

  • Philanthropic structures
  • Family legacy
  • Purpose-driven capital
Tax & wealth strategy

Six strategies that put more of your wealth back to work.

Tax Strategy

Tax Method Changes

A review of how your business and real estate holdings treat tangible property for tax purposes. Where accounting methods can be changed under the tangible property regulations, owners can capture large deductions (without future recapture) and improve cash flow without amending prior returns.

Tax Strategy

Tax Credits

Credits reduce tax dollar for dollar, which makes them among the most valuable tools in the code. We help identify the credits your business, property and activities may already qualify for, and coordinate the work with your CPA.

Business Owners

Enterprise Risk Management

Many owners are effectively self-insured for the risks the commercial market will not cover. This strategy lets a profitable business fund coverage for those exposures with deductible premiums, then participate in the underwriting results when claims are favorable.

Owner & Liquidity Strategy

Management Services Organizations

An MSO divides the business in two: one company keeps the licensed professionals and client relationships, while a separate services company holds the support functions such as HR, marketing, IT and accounting. The owner keeps control of the people and culture that make the firm what it is, while gaining clarity, flexibility and planning opportunity.

Tax Financing

Don't use your own money to pay the tax

On a large tax obligation, your capital is usually better working in your business and investments. We show you how to fund it thoughtfully and carefully, so the tax is paid without draining the capital that builds your wealth.

Plan Design

The Qualified Plan Alternative

401(k) plans are great for workers, and rarely the best tool for owners. We show business owners compelling alternatives designed around their own objectives, while managing the fiduciary exposure that sits personally with them.

On the right to plan
“Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury. There is not even a patriotic duty to increase one's taxes. Over and over again the Courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible.”
Judge Learned HandHelvering v. Gregory, 1934
How we work

A deliberate process, not a product.

i.

Understand the whole picture

We begin by listening, then map your business interests, entities, tax returns, estate documents, insurance and the advisors already in your life.

ii.

Coordinate your professionals

We bring your CPA, attorney and investment advisor to the same table, so each is solving the same problem rather than three different ones.

iii.

Implement with care

Strategies are sequenced, documented and carried out with your own professionals, with a clear understanding of the risks, trade-offs and who is responsible for what.

iv.

Steward over time

Law, business and family circumstances change. We review annually and adjust, so the plan stays aligned with what you are trying to accomplish.

We are likely a good fit if

  • You own a profitable business or hold significant wealth
  • You already work with a CPA, attorney or other advisors
  • Your tax, estate and business decisions have become interconnected
  • You want a deliberate plan and are willing to be a partner in it

We are probably not the right firm if

  • You are looking for a single product or a quick fix
  • You want investment management alone
  • You prefer to work without your existing professionals
  • You are looking for guaranteed outcomes
The Integrated Advisory Team

Your CPA, attorney and advisors solving the same problem, together.

With the family and its business at the center, Smart Stewardship acts as strategic coordinator, helping each discipline work toward the same objectives. It is the operating model of a family office, without needing one.

Situations we help navigate

You may recognize yourself here.

In practice

What coordinated planning looks like.

Illustrative scenario

The profitable owner with a growing tax bill

Situation
A multi-location business owner with consistent profits, significant real estate and several uninsured business risks.
What was coordinated
A review of property accounting methods with the CPA, and an evaluation of an enterprise risk strategy alongside the existing insurance program.
Why it mattered
Tax decisions and risk decisions were made together, and more of the owner's capital stayed working in the business.
Illustrative scenario

The practice owner planning the next chapter

Situation
A professional-practice owner with a retirement plan built for employees and no clear path for ownership transition.
What was coordinated
A review of the entity structure with counsel, an MSO evaluation, and plan alternatives designed for the owner.
Why it mattered
Operations, ownership and retirement planning were aligned before a transition conversation began.
Illustrative scenario

The family with a large tax obligation ahead

Situation
A family facing a substantial tax payment from a liquidity event, with charitable intentions and heirs to consider.
What was coordinated
An evaluation of how to fund the obligation without draining capital, together with gifting and charitable discussions with the family's attorney.
Why it mattered
The family made deliberate choices about what goes to taxes, heirs and charity, rather than defaulting.

These scenarios are illustrative composites for educational purposes. They do not represent actual clients or results, and individual circumstances and outcomes vary. Strategies involve risk and are not suitable for everyone.
